Inspired Acts of Co-Creation: On Collaboration

Collaboration, exchange, dialogue and reciprocity have all become important values in the contemporary art world, whether in relation to the process of making art or staging exhibitions. Claire Bishop has even argued that the 'social turn' in contemporary art has prompted an ethical turn in art criticism – manifest in a heightened attention to how ethically a given collaboration is undertaken. Why has this happened, and how is it happening in Australia? This forum, fusing anecdotal knowledge and critical insights, will specifically consider the potentials and pitfalls for artists and institutions engaged in acts of co-creation. What are the rewards and challenges that come of acting as an initiator of collaboration, working with people and communities both inside and outside the relative comfort of the art world? What happens to conventional notions of authorship? Is collaboration more democratic? What models exist? Speakers will address the topic from various perspectives – artistic and institutional, practical and theoretical – ranging from an individual artist to an international museum director.

Australian Art: The Turn to Music

While crossovers between art and music are hardly new, Melbourne in particular seems to be currently enjoying an increasing intensity of interest in all things sonic. This forum explores the ongoing appeal of music – and more broadly sound – to Australian visual artists, from avant-garde experiments with noise to new wave melodies and cover-band rock. A diverse lineup of artists and curators will consider the unique shape of these intersections in the Australian contemporary art scene. What motivates an artist to perform, either solo or in a band? How do live performance and recorded music become or contribute to an artist's practice? How do artists both celebrate and deconstruct musical stereotypes, such as masculine rock myths? Why are galleries increasingly open to featuring live music performed by visual artists?
