The Melbourne Art Foundation Awards celebrate excellence, innovation and career achievement in the visual arts, an area often under-acknowledged as a crucial element of Australian cultural life. John Mawurndjul, a leading Aboriginal/Kuninjku artist from Arnhem Land who won the award in 2009 was deeply moved by the affirmation of his bark painting tradition by his arts community peers. The Melbourne Arts Foundation's biennial awards are a standout event in the national arts calendar.
