Val Wens presents 𝘚𝘌𝘕𝘑𝘈 𝘋𝘐 𝘗𝘈𝘕𝘑𝘈𝘓𝘜 (Dusk in Panjalu), open until 27 April at @void_melbourne (Naarm/Melbourne).

The exhibition discusses the history of Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie (The Dutch East India Company) and its questionable and destructive colonialist activities in Indonesia, particularly in East Java. The company’s main objective was to monopolise the spice and slave trade in the East Indies. In addition, the company looted Javanese medieval artefacts over centuries.

𝘚𝘌𝘕𝘑𝘈 𝘋𝘐 𝘗𝘈𝘕𝘑𝘈𝘓𝘜 references (in photography and video) culturally and politically charged sites across East Java.

Following her presentation of work at Melbourne Art Fair 2024, Julia Gutman's first solo exhibition in Naarm/Melbourne, 𝘌𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘈𝘳𝘦 𝘓𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘈𝘭𝘴𝘰 𝘠𝘰𝘶 is currently on show at @sullivanstrumpf until 27 April. In this new body of work, @julia__gutman grapples with the distance between the self and other.

Made almost entirely from clothes donated to the artist by her community, the works in this exhibition are stitched together to recall the surface of painting and are rich with art historical references. Here, Gutman makes a self-conscious attempt to see the world outside of her own eyes, all the while knowing such a task is impossible.

𝘬𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘬𝘪𝘯, an enveloping artwork created in situ by kamilaroi/bigambul artist Archie Moore and curated by Ellie Buttrose, Curator of Contemporary Australian Art, QAGOMA, premieres at the Australia Pavilion at the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia.

Moore transforms the Pavilion with a vast hand-drawn genealogical chart spanning 65,000+ years. Drawing on his Kamilaroi, Bigambul, British and Scottish heritage, the installation embodies Moore’s enduring exploration of history and identity, central themes in his artistic practice spanning over 30 years. The work confronts the ongoing legacies of colonial history, with a focus on the over-incarceration of First Nations Peoples.

Melbourne Art Fair warmly congratulates Archie Moore and Ellie Buttrose.

Commissioned by @creative.australia, the exhibition is on view until 24 November 2024. Moore is represented by The Commercial, Gadigal Country/Sydney.

@gallerysallydancuthbert (Gadigal Country/Sydney) presents 𝘗𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘵, a new sculpture series by Donna Marcus, until 5 May. The exhibition features work made from @donnamarcus_ material of choice, repurposed domestic aluminium. Traversing the wall and floor, Marcus’ simple geometric shapes and colour compositions create complex sculptural harmony - referencing minimalism, modernism and feminism through her unique visual language linking colour and material to memory.

Marcus' survey exhibition, 𝘙𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘦, coincides with 𝘗𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘵 at Home of the Arts @hotagc, until 28 April.

Melbourne Art Fair congratulates all artists chose

Melbourne Art Fair congratulates all artists chosen to participate in the 16th edition of the Sharjah Biennial next year, 6 February - 15 June 2025. Attaining international recognition for Australasian contemporary artists, among those initially announced to present works are Indigenous Australians Brian Martin @brianmartin_artist and Yhonnie Scarce @yhonniescarce, Fijian Australian Shivanjani Lal @arti_shivanjani and Aotearoa artists Michael Parekōwhai, Saffronn Te Ratana and Kate Newby @kate__newby.

The Sharjah Biennial 16, produced by the Sharjah Art Foundation, is curated by Alia Swastika, Amal Khalaf, Megan Tamati-Quennell, Natasha Ginwala and Zeynep Öz. Together, the curators will enliven methodologies that inform their personal practices to amplify the contextual specificities of Sharjah. Discover more at @sharjahart

In collaboration with members of the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Choir, they transform the poem and vocal arrangement into a multichannel sound installation.

@darrenknightgallery (Gadigal Country/Sydney) presents 𝘙𝘦𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘬 by Alan Constable until 13 April, in collaboration with @artsprojectaust (Naarm/Melbourne).

Alan Constable’s enduring fascination with the camera began when he was 8 years old. Modelled as a child from cardboard, cut paper and glue, he has developed his aesthetic into working with clay.

Legally blind, these works are created with his hands and his heart. The poetic renaissance of a timeless tradition, they are an intimate and intuitive response to a world he knows but cannot see.
